5G to the past: How will the 6G network work?

Until recently, the 5G network, which was only a technological innovation, today has become a universal solution that affects many aspects of our lives. Although work on it continues. However, all this is weakening compared to the announcements and forecasts about what 6G technology will bring us in a few years.

6G is the next stage of continuous improvement of current technological achievements and the ongoing innovation race before our eyes. The new network should be launched in 2030. It is already estimated that 6G will offer transfer speeds of up to 1 Tb / s (for comparison, 5G is up to 20 Gb / s). It is also assumed that in the case of the successor to 5G, communication delays … will be a microsecond. In other words, data transfer will be almost instantaneous.

All this means that the entire infrastructure will have to be adapted to 6G technology. Relay stations should be smaller and more efficient, the data received should be more regular, and the risk of overheating of devices should be minimized. This marks another major technological breakthrough, which is improving the quality of life of each of us.

What can be the practical application of 6G network? For example, the ability to detect the exact location (even up to a centimeter), the presence of specific objects or people and recognize them (a computer can determine whether a person is engaged, recreate his appearance and even determine what material he uses!) , the wider use of robots in everyday areas of our lives (delivery of shipments, their storage and all logistics, fully autonomous transport) or remote operations. First of all, it improved the connection between man and machine. We will probably also learn the real potential of machine learning and artificial intelligence, and our smartphones will become devices … contactless!

Even before the introduction of the 5G network, there were concerns about its harmful effects on our health. Although this turned out to be untrue, it was not possible to avoid the disturbing news in the media. Meanwhile, the construction of the network was carried out in accordance with European standards and the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiation Protection and the World Health Organization. In addition, the waves used to transmit data have been studied and analyzed by scientists for more than 30 years, and the World Health Organization has never received evidence that they have a negative impact on human health.

In the case of 6G technology, there are many signs that we will avoid this kind of misunderstanding and uncertainty. At the planning and creation stage of the new network, the greatest care is taken to ensure its complete security. And it is resistant to all kinds of external attacks.

At this point, we can note the war in Ukraine, which began with an attack on mobile networks – a number of other European countries also suffered as a result of the attack on Ukrainian infrastructure. As for the 6G network – we are already thinking about how to protect ourselves from this type of threat. However, it should be noted that there is a risk of imitating people or organizations or stealing information collected by smartphones, tablets and other devices.

The war in Ukraine has clearly shown that cyberspace has become another battleground in today’s world. On the one hand, you must be aware of this, on the other hand – you must actively defend yourself and take a number of preventive measures. Modern networking standards are not just amazing opportunities to make human life easier, save, or even overcome the barrier of distance – it is enough to mention the ability to control a person remotely. This is a lot of information about all the elements of everyday life – both individuals and companies or economic sectors. Interference protection, data theft prevention and, above all, minimizing the potential damage of an attack are the most important tasks facing 6G network designers.

Cyber ​​war has been going on for a long time and will intensify over time. This is a very topical and topical issue, so it is not surprising that experts from all over the world are always interested in how to deal with it at various conferences. One of them, CYBERSEC FORUM / EXPO, will be held on May 17-18 at the ICC in Katowice.

The topic of the event will be cyber security. This is an issue that the creators of 6G technology are also considering. How to ensure the security of digital infrastructure? What is the role of cyberspace in modern warfare? How do authoritarian regimes use technology, and is it possible to “complicate their lives” in colloquial language? Participants of the CYBERSEC FORUM / EXPO conference will answer these questions. Kersti Kaljulaid (President of Estonia 2016-2021), David van Well (Deputy Secretary General of NATO), Mikhail Fedorov (Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine) and Janusz Cieszinski (Secretary of State and Government Plenipotentiary for Cyber ​​Security).

Impressive speed is one thing. Privacy and security seem more important. The 6G network is designed to protect us from the dangers we already have and will face in the future. The possibility of various types of attacks on devices and software is growing dynamically. 6G should be an effective response to this.
