On the commercialization and transfer of modern technology to the economy, collaboration with the academic community, and the role of Lukasiewicz Campuses, says Marcin Kraska, vice president of research and development at the Lukasiewicz Research Network.

Karol Mórawski, aleBank.pl: What is needed to strengthen cooperation between Polish scientists and business and, consequently, to increase the use of Polish inventions and scientific and technical ideas in the economy?

Marcin Kraska, Łukasiewicz Research Network: When it comes to cooperation between scientists and business, I have two good news. First, in the Polish innovation ecosystem, the number of tools that can be used by entrepreneurs looking for competitive advantages in the market is growing. There are many options, from a package of financial incentives such as a discount on robotics, which has been in place since the beginning of this year, to existing sources of funding or to comprehensive solutions offered by the Lukasiewicz Research Network.

The last good news is that the number of entrepreneurs who see the benefits of innovation is growing every year. The COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be an accelerator of this process, especially in the field of digital solutions.

This global trend and the systematic increase in spending on innovation are also reflected in the number of projects we manage under our property system, Łukasiewicz Challenges. Entrepreneurs have already used the mechanism we launched in the first year of our activity more than a thousand times.

Science under the sign of Łukasiewicz can offer business support in four areas of research that are critical to the economy today: sustainable economy and energy, digital transformation, smart and clean mobility, and health.

However, it is important to keep in mind that good cooperation depends on speed, focus on implementation solutions and trust between the parties. On the one hand, the science business must understand its needs and the reality of the sale of technology and products invented by science.

On the other hand, the business must open to innovation and spend its time and money on new solutions that create a competitive advantage and Polish technological thinking. Recent times have shown that production and technological independence create a competitive advantage for companies and the country itself. And for all this, it is important to build trust and sustainable cooperation based on the knowledge and experience of Polish scientists.

What is the role of the Lukasiewicz Research Network in building a bridge between science and the real economy?

– Lukasiewicz is undoubtedly a new quality in science and business relations, an attitude based on the experience of the best scientists of all Lukasiewicz institutes, not just one.

Since its inception, we have focused on the commercialization of modern technologies and their transfer to the economy. For almost three years, we have focused our activities among the Lukasiewicz institutes on the most important areas in terms of the development of Polish entrepreneurs and the development of the skills of Polish scientists, such as microelectronics, research and so on. Internet of Things, modular construction, electric vehicles and hydrogen technologies.

We also focus on working closely with the academic community to mobilize local research and business communities. Our partners currently include 12 universities that we are already developing, or in the near future we plan to develop international research and development projects using EU funds, including Horizon Europe.

We will be supported by the Center for Vision and International Cooperation, which we launched last year at Lukasiewicz-Orgmasz, in building partnerships and commercializing research results.

What areas does Polish science have the opportunity to offer to companies?

– Science under the sign of Łukasiewicz can offer business support in four areas of research that are very important to the economy today: sustainable economy and energy, digital transformation, smart and clean mobility and health. There is a wide range of technological problems that business addresses to us.

These include technologies in areas such as automation and robotics, energy storage, photonics and microelectronics, energy, material engineering, electric vehicles, construction, artificial intelligence, hydrogen and chemical technologies, or materials recycling and recovery technologies.

We also support companies in the aviation, drone and space technology industries.

Currently, our partners include 12 universities that we have already developed or plan to develop international research and development projects in the near future.

Companies are often aware of what they need to improve in their processes, but have no idea where they will look for a specific person to solve the problem. Although some centers have been merged, they do not know who to turn to.

We make this connection as simple as possible. Just fill out the form available on our website www.lukasiewicz.gov.pl and a team of about 4.5 thousand scientists and engineers from Lukasiewicz offers to develop an effective application in no more than 15 working days.

This system works, and asiukasiewicz’s consistently growing group of satisfied customers proves it!
