During the presentation of the financial results for 2021, the president of Play raised the issue of frequency distribution of mobile networks. The situation in Ukraine today shows how important network capacity is. Meanwhile, we are talking only about 5G in the context of high-speed Internet. Operators also need to change the story.
In Poland, the frequency distribution lies. And he begins to feel comfortable
The president of Play handled the conversation over the distribution of frequencies. It is true that their distribution in Poland is a lie. It is the only thing that has happened in recent years displacement, ie the frequency sequencing of the 2100 MHz band. In addition, operators have had the same network resources for several years. They need to keep the increasingly congested LTE network (data consumption is growing rapidly, we will return to it), as well as produce at least a small piece for the 5G network.
Inevitably, we are approaching the second anniversary of the abolition of the 5G target frequency (C-band) auction. at a time had to move so much that I think everyone lost count. The issue of distribution of the 26 GHz band is not discussed at all, and there is silence about the 5G network at 700 MHz. Until recently, it was practically impossible to launch 5G on the frequency used by terrestrial television throughout the country in the context of the conflict in the East. Does the government have alternatives? Probably does not know.

Play CEO on the need to distribute new frequencies
The CEO of Play noted that now we have taken the cost of not giving operators a wider frequency range. According to him operators feel threatened due to possible depletion of the capacity of current networks. After all, in a few days at least a few hundred thousand new people began to use Polish mobile networks (let’s say that not all of the more than 2 million refugees from Ukraine use mobile phones). Of course, you can build new transmitters and base stations, but you can’t do it forever.
According to Jean-Marc Harion, there is a need to change the story around the distribution of new frequencies.
We have a period of peace in Poland now, but imagine what would happen in a worse situation. Therefore, we must learn from the situation in Ukraine and separate new groups. We are talking about the 5G network, its development, high-speed internet, blah blah blah … It doesn’t go away. We are talking about increasing the bandwidth we need now
– Play president said.
He rightly noted that effective mobile communication also affects the security of the country and its people. It is enough to see how important this is now in Ukraine.

The rod has two ends. Operators need to change the story
On the one hand, you can (and rightly!) Blame the rulers for the fact that the distribution of new frequencies is practically non-existent. Theoretically, this is the responsibility of the UKE, but it is not the UKE that has replaced its president in the fight against the pandemic, nor has the UKE been able to adopt cybersecurity rules for the second year in a row. Without it, 5G UKE cannot hold an auction.
On the other hand, the operators say for months About 5G network, its development, fast internet and all this. Because without it, they could not sell their offers and new subscriptions. These are the operators who need to change the conversation a bit. It is true that they are a hostage to the state’s delay in this matter, but they could change something in their communication.

Game results for 2021
Now let’s take a look at the results of the Play Network for 2021. The company earned 7.3 billion PLN (an increase of 2% year-on-year), of which sales revenue amounted to 4.3 billion PLN (an increase of 6.4%). EBITDAal rose 31% to 3.1 billion due to sales of some Cellnex transmitters. Play sees the future in the sharing infrastructure.
Play’s customer base has grown to 15.7 million (424,000 people), of which 12.1 million are active customers (numbers, services) (an increase of 323,000). 69% of them are subscribers. The number of home service customers increased 2.1 times to 267,000. More than 100,000 customers use television services, and the number of landline Internet customers has increased fivefold to 40,000.
Play also ranked in the TOP10 (№6) among the largest CIT payers in Poland with 296,154,531 PLN.

10,000 base stations are nearby. What’s next for UPC?
Play currently has 9,767 base stations (an increase of 11% over the year to 967 stations), and the corresponding 10,000 will become a reality. It is possible that Play may be so much physically, but it is waiting for the required permissions. The number of these stations is 99.4% of the country’s LTE network coverage. The network is operating at the highest speed, as the number of data transmitted has increased significantly over the past three years. From 1 exabyte in 2019, to 1.5 EB in 2020, to 2 EB in 2021.
We know very little about the future of UPC, but the president of Play has announced some plans. There is enough between April 1-4 to complete the operation. Initially, two brands will continue to operate in the market – Play and UPC. This is due to the strong position of the UPC. The brand is known by Poles and is well coordinated. Rebranding is inevitable, but we will definitely wait for it. As for any details of the proposals, it is too early.
Play does not abandon the fiber-optic Internet offered in Vectra lines (currently 90% of all lines provided by Play). This is due to the fact that there are no UPCs, but there are places where Vectra is.
