Birds in the feeder – who will visit our feeder?

When deciding on a feeder, we think about who will use it. You need to know that the size, content and location of our feeder will be affected, among others – we will meet with different types of property in one country, and others in urban buildings. Similarly, with the size of the feeder – breasts, bullfinches or sparrows will not have any problems with access to such food in small feeders, and for species such as woodpeckers, cows or magpies it is worth preparing a larger space.

In home food we can find the most: house and field sparrows (also called mazurkas), titmouse, bullfinches, spinach, greenfinches, goldfinches, mumwings, blackbirds and robins. Let’s not forget that with the help of these animals, most of the insects that are harmful to us or our plants and trees are destroyed. Birds also enrich our environment visually and often relax by reading.

We must also pay special attention to the proper location of the poultry canteen. When we live in an apartment, we need to make sure that our pet does not have access to a feeder – especially cats can follow every step of the birds with a cruel commitment. We should not install any moving parts near the feeder that could disturb the birds.

Bird feed on the balcony

When choosing a feeder for the balcony, we must be guided not only by its aesthetics, but also functionality and practicality in terms of birds. The feeder should not restrict the field of vision, as the birds should have an overview of the situation nearby. The built-in feeder may seem like a trap to them, so they will be less willing to use it. The bird feeder should also be kept clean, as it should be cleaned regularly to prevent the spread of potential disease to visiting birds. All you need is water and washing up liquid, so we can easily clean dirt and old dishes. So which bird feeder should you choose for your balcony?

Bird feeder

Classic bird feed

A classic bird feeder usually takes the form of a cabin or house. Such a home can be found in small quantities in most pet stores and online stores. We can also make a simple feeder from maple or other available wood. There are also birdhouses made of plastic, which are usually easier to clean than traditional wooden boxes and are more resistant to weather conditions.

Modern bird feeders with feeders

Modern feeders can be in different forms, which, in addition to functionality, will be aesthetic for us. Such feeders often have an internal bunker and feeder so that the contents are not exposed to rain and snow and therefore do not spoil as quickly as they keep the food dry and clean.

Nutritious meatballs

When we often choose this type of food for birds, it is also a good idea to feed fat balls called meatballs. Such feeders are usually cheap and quick to clean, as well as easy to hang.

Bird food at his feet

A foot nourishment is an excellent solution when you have a garden. Such a nutrient is available in various settings, thanks to which it will look great in any garden. We can choose a feeder made of both natural materials and plastic. If we have a cat, it is worth choosing a feeding leg long enough to prevent the predator from jumping towards the birds. We must not forget the perfect climbing skills – the foot must be made of a material that will prevent these activities.

Creative bird feed

We can get a bird feed, but we can do it ourselves with little effort. Among the interesting store solutions, for example, we can find a transparent feeder attached to the window with suction cups. This solution allows you to closely monitor the life of birds and can be an excellent form for gaining ornithological knowledge, especially by the youngest ones. Many people decide to make their feeders from recycled materials, such as toilet paper rolls, egg containers, milk cartons, boxes or bottles. Such temporary solutions perfectly perform the most important functions.

What to feed the birds?

When we decide to feed the birds, we must do so responsibly. Birds get used to where they find food, and especially in winter, our place can be the last resort where they spend a significant portion of their energy. Conscious nutrition is also related to choosing the optimal food. Most people are accustomed to feeding birds (especially waterfowl) with bread and processed foods, which is harmful to them. Lack of knowledge and good intentions often serve us badly as birds by stroking our egos. You can use to feed the birds:

  • grain mixes – you can choose ready-made compositions available in pet stores and online or create your own. Which grain to feed? A special favorite of most species is the sunflower, which can be served both shelled and successfully.
  • apple core and peel and dried fruit – loved by squirrels and squirrels. The fruit cannot be sweetened or otherwise sweetened.
  • pork – it is important that it is unprocessed and unsalted. Hang a piece of fat in a place accessible to birds, and if the outside temperature does not exceed 5 degrees, throw it away after a maximum of three weeks – then it should be removed before it spoils.
  • Walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts – no salt and spices. They can be divided into whole or small parts.
  • ready-made flasks and fat balls – they consist of grains, nuts and even insects stuck in the oil. Such finished products are often found in hanging nets, but it is worth placing them in a more convenient bird feeder, which will prevent small birds’ paws from wandering in the net.
  • water – we often forget that birds also need to drink, which can be difficult when the available water is frozen. We can water even the simplest flower stand.

Before choosing a feeder, we need to start comparing the products available on the market

Feeding the birds is a beautiful gesture, but it is worth doing with some knowledge, so that we can avoid harming them unknowingly. Birds feed primarily during the most severe frosts and snows, when they have difficulty finding food, but you need to get used to them more quickly and leave some food at the destination in early October and November, which will allow them to accumulate fat. At the end of winter (depending on the intensity of snow and frost, it can be both early and late March), we should stop feeding and allow the birds to eat on their own.
